Lost Nordic Skier in the Santa Fe Ski Basin

At approximately 3pm on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, a Search and Rescue Mission was initiated to find a 50 year old female skier who had become lost in the Rio Nambe drainage. The Mission was supported by Santa Fe SAR Incident Management Team, Communications Team and Ground Search Teams, in addition to a Ground Search Team from Atalaya SAR. An all night search was hampered by blowing snow and temperatures at 4 degrees and wind chill at -17 degrees. A ski team from Atalaya SAR following tracks potentially left by the subject located her the next morning, having taken refuge under a log for the night with her dog. The team evaluated her condition, gave her nourishment and determined she was able to be escorted out of the area. The subject had taken a wrong turn off of Raven’s Ridge, crossed the snow covered Windsor Trail and ended up in the Rio Nambe drainage near the upper end of the Nambe Reservoir. SFSAR teams were redeployed to intercept and support the Atalaya team as they escorted the subject downhill from the reservoir.
