At 3:00am, July 24, 2016, Santa Fe Search and Rescue was notified that a SAR Mission was being initiated for a missing trail runner in the Santa Fe Ski Basin area. The runner was reportedly participating in a 30 mile training run and had not returned to his vehicle the prior afternoon. Two SFSAR ground teams were deployed at first daylight and the overdue subject was located at 8:00am in good health and escorted back to Incident Base. The runner explained that he had missed a trail junction late in the afternoon near Puerto Nambe and by the time he realized his error made the decision to overnight due to failing daylight and fatigue. He was well equipped to do so with extra clothing, water and shelter. He began to back track his route at 5:30am and was met by the search team shortly after that. The positive outcome of this Mission is testimony to the need for all venturing into the wilderness to be prepared for the unexpected with the appropriate gear and experience.
