Lost Hikers Near Santa Fe Ski Basin

On March 21st, 2017, at 9:00 pm, a Search and Rescue Mission was initiated to locate and assist three out of state hikers who reportedly began their day hike on the Borrego Trail below the Santa Fe Ski Area. A short cell phone contact was accomplished by the Incident Management Team where the subjects reported information establishing clues to where they might be and concerning information about how ill prepared they were for the night time temperatures on the mountain.

Missing Snow Boarder – Taos Ski Valley

At 9:00pm on February 14th, 2017, a Mission was initiated to find a male snow boarder at the Taos Ski Valley who had failed to pick up his children at the ┬áSki School at day’s end and was determined to be missing. The resort Ski Patrol with additional personnel, had swept the slopes during normal closing operation with no sign of the missing snow boarder.

Hamilton Mesa Medical Emergency

On May 30th, 2017, State Police reported that a 68 year old male who had hiked into the Hamilton Mesa area on the Pecos River with two family members for a camping and fishing outing required medical assistance and extraction from the area. After arriving at their camp site, the subject became ill and extremely fatigued and unable to perform any normal activity.

Missing Pinon Hunter

At 1:00am, Monday, October 3rd, A Mission was initiated for a missing female pinion hunter in an area north of Ojo Caliente who had become separated from her group around noon the previous day. It was reported that she was inadequately dressed for the overnight weather conditions which included rain showers and low temperatures.

Overdue Ultra Trail Runner

On Sunday, July 24, 2016, a Mission was called out for an overdue Ultra Runner who had failed to return to the Santa Fe Ski Basin parking area the previous afternoon. His planned 30 mile run was from the ski basin to Wilderness Gate up Raven’s Ridge to Deception Lake to Penitent to Puerto Nambe to Windy Saddle to Santa Fe Baldy and back to Lake Katherine to Lake Johnson then back to Windy Saddle and back to the parking area.

Lost Day Hikers Near Atalaya Peak

At 2:00pm on Wednesday, July 14, 2016, NM State Police received a 911 call from two female hikers reporting they were lost near Atalaya Peak. They had hiked to Atalaya Peak, turned to go to Pacheco Peak, but turned around before reaching Pacheco to return to Atalaya Peak. They missed Atalaya Peak and ended up east of the Peak at approximately 2:00pm,

Ski Basin Trail Runner

At 3:00am, July 24, 2016, Santa Fe Search and Rescue was notified that a SAR Mission was being initiated for a missing trail runner in the Santa Fe Ski Basin area. The runner was reportedly participating in a 30 mile training run and had not returned to his vehicle the prior afternoon.

Forrest Fenn Treasure Hunter Missing Near Santa Fe

On January 15th, 2016, a Search and Rescue Mission was initiated to search for a 54 year old Colorado resident who had not been heard from since January 4th. The subject’s vehicle was located Friday at the end of the Old Buckman Road and his dog and raft were subsequently located 9 miles down river.

Missing Boy Scout

On June 28, 2016, 5 scouts and 2 adult leaders were camped near Jack’s Creek on the southeast side of Pecos Baldy. At about 7pm, one of the scouts climbed up the ridge west of camp alone. When he did not return a search by the leaders was initiated with no results.

Lost Backpacker near Lake Katherine

At 4:00am on June 29, 2016, a District 1 Search and Rescue Mission was initiated for a 70-year-old backpacker last seen at 4:30pm the prior day near Windy Saddle, west of Lake Katherine in the Santa Fe National Forest. The Reporting Party was a friend who said that the subject had just arrived in the Santa Fe area from a much lower altitude and was extremely fatigued as they reached the saddle above the lake.
