July Social Hike. Destination: Eye of the Sandias.
Info from Karon:Team:

The Eye of the Sandias is a quirky landmark situated high in the Sandia Mountain foothills overlooking Tijeras Canyon that first appeared in the 1960s. The large painted eye with a Zia symbol in the pupil and a large tear running down that is said to represent sadness at the encroachment of development.

This southern Sandia hike makes for a fun outing and is an ideal winter hike. The loop we will be taking is approximately 3.8 miles, with a steep 1,200’ elevation gain on approach. Map attached.

We start at the trailhead located at the East end of Copper Ave, NE in the Sandia Foothills. Due to limited parking and exposure we will meet at the TH at 0700 to start hiking. You are allowed to park along Copper Ave if you can’t find a spot in the parking lot (there are only six spots and this is a popular mountain bike area).

Bring plenty of water to sustain yourself and sunscreen. There is no shade on this exposed hike and it will be warm.

***Caution*** This is NOT a dog friendly hike due to presence of rattlesnakes, mountain bicyclists, and terrain hazards. If you bring your dog you will be responsible for their safety.

Directions to Albuquerque, Copper Ave NE TH:

Take I25 South to Exit 226A, be in the left lane of this exit to head east on I40. Take the Tramway Blvd exit, stay in left lane and take a left at the light. Once on Tramway, take your second right on to Copper Ave. Follow to the end.

El Dorado folks will leave The Agora East lot at 5:45 am

Townies will leave from in front of Starbucks at DeVargas Mall at 6:00 am
